| If you are looking for something to do in Edinburgh that is a little different from the average tourist attraction, look no further than Auld Reekie Tours.
Taking you back through the mists of time to an Edinburgh that is a world away from today's modern city, Auld Reekie Tours will show you a side of Edinburgh that isn't what you would expect from one of Europe's most famous cities.
This is a tour full of tales of witchcraft, cannibals, ghosts, myths and legends, the Great Fire, grave-robbers and plagues. As you can see, Auld Reekie Tours are not for the faint of heart!
You will learn about the sinister underground vaults that are a hive of paranormal activity. You will also hear about some of the dark and gruesome tales of Edinburgh's history. During the Industrial Revolution, the city was thick with smog and the inhabitants of Edinburgh's slums lived in poverty while body snatchers raided the graves of the deceased.
It is for these reasons that we have chosen the name Auld Reekie for our tours.
Our tours centre around the Old town below South Bridge. We will take you to the city's infamous undergound vaults, where you will learn about ancient Pagan rituals and the ghastly reason why witchcraft can no longer be practised in the old temple. You will also journey to the crypt where plague victims lived, where you will hear of the gruesome conditions in which they lived.
All our tours deal with the sinister aspects of Edinburgh's past. The vaults where we conduct our tours were built in the mid 1700's. Once opened, these vaults soon fell into disuse due to damp and poor conditions.
The wealthy merchants who once used them for storage soon moved out and the poor and disadvantaged moved in, making use of the cheap rent. They were not alone. Soon the conditions deteriorated and the place became a hive of criminal activity. People succumbed to the harsh conditions, disease and worse!
We want you to be entertained and educated as well as spooked, and so our trained actors with give you an expertly-delivered tour full of details of Edinburgh's dark and sinister past. Each guide has a different style, giving you a unique flavour of the period and the horrors that occurred in the city. If you ask them nicely, they might just tell you of their own experiences of the vault's infamous poltergeist! Be warned, this malevolent spirit has been known to appear on the tour, so be on your guard!
As if that wasn't bone-chilling enough, Auld Reekie Tours' Torture Museum gives visitors a graphic history of cruelty, featuring 16th/17th century instruments of pain and death from Nurnberg and Bamberg Castles in Germany.
Our evening tours finish at the most haunted pub in Scotland, Nicol Edwards, where you can calm your nerves with a drink or two.
As you will have gathered already, our tours are not for the faint of heart, so if you are of a nervous disposition, you might want to stay indoors rather than experience the horrors on show on the Auld Reekie Tours.
