The historic streets and sights of the Old Town in Edinburgh bring to life the rich cultural heritage of medieval Scotland with walking tours a plenty being the best way to immerse oneself in that historic vibe for which the city is so renowned the world over. While there is more than enough to get excited about for lovers of history who take to the streets what lies, quite literally, underneath adds a whole new dimension to the cultural canon of the city's historic attractions. This is the Real Mary King's Close, an underground warren of passageways where history, legend and folklore come together in a setting which provides a vivid and entertaining slice of the darkest recesses of old Edinburgh.
Walled up in the 18th century to provide the foundations for the Royal Exchange, now the city chambers, the true extent of the series of closes was once more revealed in 2003 and has since proved to be a major attraction for visitors to the city keen to experience Edinburgh life as it was from the 17th to 18th centuries. To add some colour and authenticity, professional tour guides come in the guise of actual residents from the age and they will regale the often dark tales of the close in an entertaining and informative manner.
The Real Mary King's Close is open all year round with the last tour at 9pm from April to October, and at 5pm weekdays during the winter months, 9pm on Saturdays and Sundays. Admission prices are £12 for adults, £6.50 for children and £10.50 concessions. Reductions are available for group bookings of 15 persons or more and a selection of special tours are available which combine the close with additional Royal Mile attractions. Contact the Real Mary King's Close for further information and booking details.
